English translation
The trembling dog
Trotted forward under the moon
With frightened eyes
Under the moon, it approached with stealthy steps
When I opened my eyes
I saw only the shadow of the telephone pole
Don’t be afraid
Because I forgot about running away
Don’t pretend to be strong
Let’s forget about how we could break [1]
I held out my hand
Because I wanted it to be licked
When I went toward that one brilliant place [2]
The dog and the moon were holding hands
Some things I lost while others I grasped [3]
At that boundary where the dog met the moon
Those hopeless, lonely fools
The dog and the moon
When they looked up at the darkened sky
They remembered how it felt to be shined upon [4]
I looked at you with doubt [5]
Because I did not trust myself
Though I hate lies
I loved you, who was an awful liar
Now that I’ve finally realized it
Let’s stop doubting each other
I was listening closely
Because I wanted you to call for me
If I held you closer, more tightly
I’m sure you would turn your back on me
I’ll just say nothing
So that you won’t go away [6]
If your heart becomes cold
I will just shed tears quietly
Some things I lose while others I gain [2]
At that boundary where the dog met the moon
==========
[1] kowarekata: “how to be broken”
otagai kowarekata wo wasuremashou: more literally at: “Let’s forget how we can both get broken”
[2] itten no mabayui basho wo mezasu toki inu to tsuki ga te wo tsuinaida:
itten no mabayui basho: “that one spec of a dazzling place”
The imagery suggests aiming/reaching for a tiny spot of dazzling brilliance, which is also a place to be; I imagine it to be blinding, like reaching for the sun. I interpret the action of reaching for the sun to be looking for love, juxtaposing that image with the metaphor of a dog joining hands with the moon.
[3] itte shimau mono te no todoku mono: lit., “things that slip away things that reach [my hands]” suggesting losing some things, gaining others.
[4] miageru koto to terasu koto wo oboeta shizunda hi wa
shinzunda hi: “the sun that has already set”
miageru koto: “looking up” – mostly likely to each other or at the sky; it isn’t specified what the dog and moon look up at
More literally: “when the dog and moon looked up, they remembered being shined upon by the sun that had already set”
[5] kubi kashigeta no wa jishin ga nai kara
kubi kashige[ru] = to tilt one’s head/cock the head to the side with skepticism, confusion, doubt, etc
jishin ga nai = to not have self-confidence
More literally: “I tilted my head because I had no confidence”
[6] kimi ga dokoka e itte shimawanu you ni
Dokoka: somewhere (an uncertain place)
Itte shimau: to go away; the shimau ending suggests this action would be regretful and an undesired outcome
More literally: “So that you do not go off somewhere”
